Most people don't see doctors for injuries

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

Physicians have said many people do not take knee and hip injuries seriously enough to visit a doctor. This has worsened the injuries and sometimes causes permanent damage. Nicolaas C. Budhiparama, an orthopedic surgeon who chairs the Indonesian Hip and Knee Society (IHKS), said few Indonesians were aware of the importance of early diagnosis regarding hip and knee injuries.

Most people with hip and knee problems, including torn meniscus one of the most common knee injuries seek medical advice only when the problem is already at an advanced stage, he told journalists on the sidelines of the 2nd Annual Scientific Meeting of IHKS, which ended on Sunday.

Poor awareness of the danger of hip and knee problems results in delayed treatment and could therefore lower people's productivity, he added. Nicolaas added traffic accidents and sports, as well as degenerative process emerge as main causes of hip and knee problems in which those body parts are forcefully twisted or receive too much pressure.

The IHKS data show that Indonesia has only 490 orthopedic surgeons, which is far lower compared to other countries. Despite such small figures, however, local orthopedic surgeons have advanced capacity in conducting orthopedic surgery.

Citing examples, Nicolaas said that orthopedic surgeons could perform an advanced technique of orthopedic surgery called double-bundle reconstruction since 2006, while other countries started such surgical technique only in 2008.

In 2006, we have been able to conduct a double-bundle reconstruction on athletes who suffer from torn-ligament, he said, Orthopedic surgeons have even already started using computer-assisted surgery (CAS) for hip and knee problems in 2004.

Improved precision and accuracy can reduce problems associated with poor implant placement, according to Richard E. Jones, a US-based orthopedic surgeon. Another improvement in local orthopedic surgery is the customized prosthesis. We already have orthopedic implants customized, meaning that we make the implants based only on the required shape, said Nicolaas. In addition, soccer is among the sports which often cause the meniscus to be torn. So are tennis, badminton and basketball.

Meniscus is the ring-like knee joint bolster which functions as a shock-absorber. A torn meniscus is a common knee injury in which athletics appears to be the leading cause. Most of the injuries occur when the knee is forcefully twisted.
Andre Pontoh, an orthopedic surgeon from Fatmawati Hospital, said that while sports had become more popular in Indonesia, most people were not aware of the potential for physical injury. I have received patients who had suffered from injuries while playing futsal, he said, while mentioning ligament, meniscus and cartilage as three body parts prone to injuries. Most patients with torn-meniscus will still be able to walk; however, their conditions may soon deteriorate as pain in their joints continues to worsen.

Their walk will be crippled. They might not even be able to move, stretch out straight or fold their knee joints. Some patients may feel that something makes certain motions inside their joints, said Andre, adding that doctors could precisely diagnose the injury by conducting a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam.
Anti-inflammatory drugs combined with sick leave may ease joint pains. When a torn-meniscus becomes symptomatic, however, arthroscopic surgery may be the best way to cure the illness and prevent permanent knee damage.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure
Well the news is sad to hear that most of the people don't even consult a doctor for their minor or major injuries it shows their pessimistic attitude and laziness. However not to be forgotten the famous proverb as "Prevention is better than cure". If we met with certain ailment of minor or major than we do have to consult a doctor for it. If the ailment is major than have to look for a specialist for getting a proper treatment of it. However it is seen that at the teen age especially t which is the age is of storm and stress where we act as if we don't care for anything and everything would be alright soon is a sign of negliance. We rely more on local prescriptions or try to bear the pain to avoid visiting from a doctors. But this time being escape would be good for you but would have a great impact as you grow up. We may feel its consequences in later life. A proper care, guidance and treatment at proper time would have prevented us from happenings of any ill things.

Remember our whole body its structure be it internal and external organs are all beautiful gifts of Almighty God Allah Rabbul Izzat and we don't have any right to spoil it but we ought to take care of it at any cost. The real justice would be to protect it from any harm as we protect ourselves from season and changing weather. Because life is precious gift of God In Holy Quran in Suarah As-Sajdah Explaination from it Allah says that He points out to man to look at his own humble beginning, beautiful and perfect and in proper proportion, each performs the functions given to it example eyes to see, ears to hear, heart to pump and supply blood etc. His material body is a piece of earth.
He Blessed you with eyes to see the things created by Him. The ears to listen to the voice of Faith and the Heart to witness the Truth, to accept and thank His Blessings to bow to Him and come to the right way.
